Created in 1961 by André and Coqueline Courrèges, Courrèges house has revolutionized the world of couture and design.
Since 1965, Courrèges has established its style favoring structured lines, sanctifying the white, then multiplying variations of colors and new materials like vinyl.
Courrèges' universe can be summarized in four words: movement, purity, color, and light.
Outstandingly optimistic and lively, Courrèges has continued since that time to leave a mark on all the areas it has ventured. The relaunch of this legendary brand today takes on a new dimension in France and internationally with the repositioning of its fashion, accessory, and perfume activities. Courrèges' vocation is to offer again and always innovative, modern products that stay true to the original ideal.
Courrèges was founded in 1961 by French couturier André Courrèges, an early proponent of the miniskirt who introduced space-age fashion to the design industry after a decade working under Cristóbal Balenciaga. The French fashion house is powered today by artistic director Nicolas Di Felice, who brings with him years of experience working for Loui Vuitton, Christian Dior, and Balenciaga, where Courrèges himself once worked. Structural separates and bold color-blocking characterize Courrèges' womenswear today, evoking the heritage of this inimitable house yet constantly reinventing and improving on its signature futurist aesthetic.
André Courrèges (1923 -2016) was a French fashion designer, known for his futuristic designs. After becoming an engineer, Courrèges quit the business at age 28 to apprentice under Cristóbal Balenciaga, where he stayed for a decade before launching his own label in 1961. You dont spend ten years working for Balenciaga without emerging as a connoisseur of shapes; Courrèges also drew on his architectural idols Le Corbusier and Eero Saarinen for inspiration. Not only was he more serious than he gets credit for, he was smart: For a time, he maintained a wildly successful business.Audrey Hepburn,Jackie Kennedy, andCatherine Deneuvewore pieces plucked from the designers bright-white atelier. Those who couldnt afford the prohibitively priced Paris originals bought copies on Seventh Avenue or patterns from McCalls.
Courrèges was influenced by modern architecture, technology, new fabrics, and modernismand futurismin art and design. Several designers lay similar claim, including Coco Chanel, who worked with and knew many modern artists, and Mary Quant, whose career parallels those of Courrèges in some ways (both Courrèges and Mary Quantlay claim to the invention of the miniskirt). Courrèges pushed his ideas to the extreme, producing some of the 20th centurys most distinctive designs.
